Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about choosing, using, and looking after your TruWater filter.
Before Buying
Why do I need a water filter?
Tap water is treated, but trace contaminants like chlorine, lead, microplastics, and PFAS can remain. TruWater filters remove up to 99.99% of what's left.
How do I choose the right system?
Consider how many people you're filtering for, what you'll use the water for, how much space you have, and whether you prefer glass or ABS plastic.
Are TruWater filters BPA-free?
Yes. All TruWater products are free of BPA, phthalates, and other toxic substances.
How long does filtering take?
About 1.5 litres per hour. New filters may run slower until fully saturated.
How long do filters last?
Filters are recommended to be changed every 6 months.
Do the filters remove microplastics?
Yes. The ceramic pre-filter's pores are smaller than microplastic particles.
Maintenance
What do I do with my filter when I go on vacation?
For a few days, keep the lower tank full and store it somewhere cool and dark. For longer trips, remove the filter and pH ring, seal them in a bag, and refrigerate for up to 6 months.
How do I clean the filter?
Rinse the upper tank under running water. If the ceramic filter is discoloured or slow, scrub it gently with the rough side of a sponge under running water.
Can I use vinegar to clean it?
Yes, for the tank and outside of the filter. Never use vinegar on the ceramic filter, pH ring, or mineral stones.
What do I do with used filters?
They can go in regular household waste.
Why don't you take back and reuse old filters?
Used filters absorb contaminants and can't be safely cleaned. Returning them would also create more environmental impact than it saves.
Troubleshooting
Water isn't flowing through the filter properly.
Soak new filters for about 10 minutes before first use, turning occasionally to release trapped air.
There's a green or brown tint on the filter.
That's algae or mineral buildup on the outside — harmless, and easy to scrub off with a sponge.
My kettle still gets limescale even with the filter.
TruWater filters remove contaminants, not hardness. They're not water softeners, so some dissolved minerals will still pass through.
Water is leaking from the tap.
Tighten the knob on the inside of the tank. If it persists, check that the washers are seated correctly.
